How to make your Laundry Smell Really Good, Naturally
So, you’ve heard the dangers of the nasty chemicals that are in most laundry detergents, fabric softeners and dryer sheets, but you still want your clothes to smell good. Below you will find the best tips, tricks and products to get your laundry to smell good naturally.
Step 1: Natural Laundry Odor Eliminators
The first step in getting your laundry to smell good, is to get the stink out.
Body odors, pet smells and evironmental smells have got to go if you want fresh smelling laundry.
The easiest way to do this is with a common household ingredient: Vinegar.
Just add ½ cup of white vinegar to your washing machine along with the detergent.
Vinegar is a 100% natural odor neutralizer that will get your clothes odor free during the wash.
No vinegar on hand? Try one of these all natural odor eliminators instead:

Once you’ve created a blank canvas, by removing any existing odors it’s time to start down the path to get your laundry smelling amazing!
Step 2: All-Natural Laundry Detergents that Actually Smell Good
As you probably already know, synthetic fragrances are not good for you.
This includes all the chemicals that are typically used in laundry detergent that make our clothes smell good out of the wash.
Unscented detergent is a great way to cut down on the chemicals you are exposed to, but your laundry will not come out smelling fresh and clean.
If you want your clothes to smell good without toxic chemicals your best bet is a product scented with essential oils.
An easy DIY method is to add a few drops of your favorite essential oil directly into an all natural un-scented laundry detergent.
If you would prefer a pre-mixed solution, here are some of the most popular brands:
Step 3: Natural dryer sheets to make your laundry smell good
There’s nothing like the fresh and clean scent of laundry fresh out of the dryer.
The problem is chemicals that are used to create those aromas.
Even if you’ve gone through the steps of removing odors and washing with a good smelling all-natural detergent, you probably want to use something in the dryer to make sure that your clothes keep smelling good for a while.
One of my favorite tips (and what we do in our house) is to use wool dryer balls with a few drops of essential oil.
You can find my favorite starter pack here.
The dryer balls help the clothes dry faster, prevent static and with the addition of essential oils the clothes smell great.
Another popular method is to make your own chemical-free dryer sheets.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Airtight storage container
- 1 cup white vinegar
- 20 drops essential oil
- Baby washcloths
Combine the vinegar and essential oil in the airtight container. Add the cloths until the liquid is absorbed and the cloths are damp, but not wet.
Then just toss a cloth in when you put your laundry in the dryer.
If you are looking for a non-DIY method here are a few non-toxic dryer products to try:
- Grab Green Stoneworks Natural Dryer Sheets
- BEYOND – Natural Dryer Sheets
- Seventh Generation Dryer Sheets
That’s interesting that vinegar would help your clothes smell better. Vinegar smells so strong, that I would have assumed the opposite. I should give that a try sometime to see how it works since I have been looking for good ways to naturally clean my clothes.
