Do you want your home to feel life a comforting respite from the rest of the world? Take inspiration from the Danish and seriously amp up the cozy and welcoming feeling of any room with these Hygge candles.
Being the type of person who is constantly freezing and loves any opportunity to cover up with a blanket and sip a hot drink, I have recently fallen in love with the concept of Hygge.
Creating a Cozy Home with Hygge
It also speaks to my desire to live simply, be in the moment and connect with my family.
The more I ready about the Hygge lifestyle the more that I become inspired by some of the major elements:
• Lighting – like candlelight we are covering below
• Satisfying food
• Comfortable clothing
• Contentment and Joy
What is Hygge?
According to Iben Sandahl, and expert on Danish life, Hygge (pronounced hue-gah) is “a way of creating a cozy time together with friends and family.”
The goal is to take all those “feel good moments” in life:
• Relaxing by the warmth and glow of the fireplace
• The feeling of a soft, warm blanket
• The taste of a delicious hot drink
• Sharing a special moment with a close friend
And making an effort to recreate those feelings as often as possible.
Candlelight and Hygge
Which do you consider more comforting?
• A bright white lightbulb
• The glare of a fluorescent light
• The soft warm glow of a candle
It’s a no-brainer right? The candlelight of course!
The soft, warm light created by a candle or lots of candles makes every moment feel more special.
That’s why we often turn down the lights when we light the candles on a birthday cake – it somehow makes the moment seem more magical.
Candlelight is an integral part of Hygge because of the dark winters in Denmark.
We all know that spending too much time in dark and gloomy weather can be a drain on our mental health.
By incorporating lots of candlelight during simple daily activities, it can help to increase our feelings of joy and relaxation.
When to light candles to create a Hygge Home
Wondering when you could include candlelight as part of your plan to make your home a cozy retreat from the rest of the world?
Here are some ideas:
• Any mealtime, not just dinner. (Our family started by lighting a candle at dinner and allowing the children to take turns blowing it out when everyone had finished the meal signaling it was ok to leave the table.)
• While bathing
• When reading
• In the morning instead of turning on the tv
• When you arrive home from work
